Monday.

On Saturday went fishing. We go fishing once per year most years. Saturday was a lovely morning so we decided to go fishing. The six of us packed a small picnic (this turned out to be fortuitous -I think that's the word I mean- in view of our fishing fortunes) and set out for the preferred lake by our preferred means of transport. Four of us walked through the forest (Ann, Ruth, Freja, and Meself). Lasse drove (well, to as near as possible) and Tuva cycled (both the latter two along rough track, then walked the last half mile or so with the rest of us. We launched the little rowing boat and I rowed Ann, Ruth, and Tuva , across to the 'island' where they disembarked and lit a fire to cook the fish that the other three of us then attempted to catch. Freja (eight) caught a medium sized perch, and we two blokes caught sweet Fanny Adams !!!! (a second World War expression whose derivation I won't trouble to explain - mainly because I don't know it -but whose meaning is I think plain. We eventually did cook the fish over the fire with a little lemon salt, and we all had a taste, but we were jolly glad of the picnic. We then (well five of us -meself and all four ladies -Lasse had a post prandial nap- took the boat and explored a bit more of the lake. We found a small secluded beach, with a circular stone fireplace, and about 90 percent of the dried up skeleton of an elk (disarticulated) and then spent a while discussing the probable sequence of events that could have led to these grisly remains. The girls decided that the likeliest events involved pirates, canibles and castaways, so we rowed away quickly before any hostile natives returned. Should add that Freja took away with her five elk front teeth as memento mori. Must close now as a cheese ommelette calls.

Friday.

Set out from Ruth's farm at ten this morning, wih granddaughers Tuva and Freja qnd drove into town, stopping off at antique shop along the way (unsuccessfully). Met up with Ruth and Lasse, and we all six went to nearby Indian restaurant that they often use, and where we had reserved a table. The restaurant has an interesting system. The customer hires a plate (for about seven pounds fifty) then helps himself from the food table. This sum includes soft drinks, and coffee. The customer is expected to make return visits to the food table (and usually obliges). Must stop now. Machine playing up. Goodbye.

More Tuesday.

Just been flicking back through old photies and came across this. It's amazing how much we've had done, and how much the garden has been altered in the last eighteen months or so. We've still got things to do to it, and it will alter more as the things we've put in mature, but it's already possible to see the pattern emerging that we've planned for it. I don't think I'll ever be a great gardener, but I can now appreciate the satisfaction that creating a garden brings. Looking at this photo, I've been trying to work out what the large whitish object in the right foreground can be. I think I must have been standing behind someone and managed to include their left shoulder. Must close now. Back soon with more (D.V.) Love, Mike and Ann.

Turesday.

The above buildings are all on a High Street near to us. The middle one (with the windows) looks even better at the back. Specially for a correspondent who likes the architecture in our area of Suffolk. Yesterday the two of us and Terry had a scrabble tea at Hilary's. Two good games (no fireworks though) that modesty prevents me telling you who won. Afterwards the three ladies went off to hear three talks in aid of a local charity. They were on :- medical tales, the Cottage Hospital, and Smallpox and the Pest House Charity. I'm afraid I didn't go. As a non medical male I don't think these are entertaining subjects and I feel a certain reticense about discussing them. It didn't bother any of the three ladies as they are all three retired medical types (Matron, Ward Sister, and G.P.), and therefore not in the least queasy about these things. They are all toughies in fact. Anyway my marital medical toughie has just called that there's a cup of tea on the go, so will close now. More later perhaps.

Saturday.

This is another snapshot of the picnic in the Deanery gardens, taken a week or so ago. In the last week
we've been to two further picnics with friends, both followed by entertainment. The first was a week ago today at Kentwell Hall followed by a performance of The Yeoman of the Guard (my favourite G. & S. Opera), and a very good performance it was, too.We went with Brenda and Warren and Judy and David. On Thursday evening of this week we went to see Romeo and Juliet performed in Rendlesham Forest. We went with Eileen and Hilary. Picnic first. Every year a very good local repertory company puts on a Shakespear play in the forest. This year's was as good as ever. At the end of the play a teenage girl in the front row (we were in the second row) was blubbing heartily. As Ann said on the way home 'I do think Shakespear could have come up with a happier ending'. Actually that's two unhappy ending in a week - Jack point and Romeo and Juliet. That sort of picnic/concert evening depends for its success totally on the weather; and it was pretty good for both ours, considering what a weird summer this has been weatherwise. Yesterday Ann motored over to Wisbech to see Gran, stayed over with her, and came back this afternoon about five pm. I got on with some work yesterday, and played three good games of scrabble this afternoon. Supper any minute so had better close. Good night.

Final bit of Monday.

The reason that Monday is now in three parts instead of two is that in between publishing parts one and two a comment was left by what Nea refers to as one of the creeps. Only by summoning the assistance of Crowbard was I able to banish the creep's comment to outer darkness. I wish to record my gratitude to Crowbard, and to record a wish that it were possible to permanently banish all creeps from my blog. I like to think I am reasonably broadminded, and I welcome comments from all but the most creepy types (this evening's creepy speciment was a pimp to put it crudely), so if you are only borderline creepy please continue to comment and I will continue to welcome your input. Goodnight and God bless you all.

Still Monday.

Monday.

Seen over a garden wall in a nearby village. I loved the chevroned brickwork between the beams. Been a busyish day. Spent this morning in town, posting letters, and generally catching up. As it was a warm sunny morning, we had an iced coffee at the local coffee shop - Not very good, rather watery with a burnt after taste, shan't try it again, in fact probably shan't try the coffee shop again, used to be good , but changed hands a while back, and was almost empty this morning. Pity, the place used to be a real asset to the town. This afternoon I spent cleaning and labelling stock ready for wednesday. All done, I think, but shall probably think of something I haven't yet done. Must knock off. I think Ann's listening to 'Just a minute' on the wireless, so will go and join her. More later perhaps.

Friday.

Snapshot is of Picnic in the Deanery garden last Sunday - Ann in the centre.
Going on from yesterday's winge, I'm glad to report that the council workmen picked our old beds up without problem at 9.30 am, also a superannuated washing machine that had outlived its usefulness. This morning my good friend Bill (my barber) called and gave me a really short haircut, as it will be about six weeks till I can get another. Had a coffee, and then was able to fix him up with a bullet mould for a pair of flintlock pocket pistols he has. We have many interests in common beside the state of my wool, so it's always a pleasure to see Bill. He refused to take any payment for the haircut. He's a good chap. About noon Jill and Keith called (fellow dealers) and purchased a leather snuffbox. Gave them a coffee and asked them to join me in a sandwich lunch, but they were unable to stay. Ann's Ansell Club morning. Nipped into bank this afternoon to pay in snuff box cheque, etc. Spent rest of day pottering, cleaning and doing up a tinder box that's been hanging about my workshop for weeks. Off to bed now. Goodnight All.
