I note those comforts include an original pew that would be uncomfortable even by severe Methodist standards, a dado to put a permanent crick in your neck and a notice forbidding you to burn a small nicotianna leaf whilst awaiting transportation by an oil-burning Colossus! Quaint and imperfect are the ways of Dr Beeching's customer-care policies!

Yes, I'm afraid I was being ironic. Do you remember the general waiting room at the Wisbech North Railway Station in the forties and early fifties. Horsehair settles and a coal fire. And there was also a 'Ladies Only' waiting room - we, as boys, could only imagine what hedonistic luxuries lay therein. And in the waiting room at Peterborough there was a glass cased working model of Mr. Stevenson's Rocket, which, if you put a ha'penny in the slot, appeared to work.
Oh, by the way, the railway at Manningtree has been electrified.
